Our younger children are supported in a nurturing co-educational environment, where they learn to respect others and collaborate in meaningful ways. Each pupil’s wellbeing is at the core of all that we do.
The school’s all-girls’ environment, from Year 5 onwards, uses the foundations of Downe House UK’s approach to each girl’s welfare. Built on the expertise of more than 100 years, traditional and culturally-sensitive values are upheld and balanced seamlessly with modern educational standards. This blend of traditional and modern, offers your daughter a safe, nurturing environment. Girls are allowed to develop as individuals, in a supportive and empowering way, with learning and pastoral care tailored to the way we know girls learn and grow best.
Enabling your child to develop a real sense of self-worth and self-confidence is extremely important to us. We want pupils to have a strong set of values, be ambitious and compassionate, so that they can make a positive contribution to the world around them. We support pupils in learning how to develop and maintain social skills, where they are aware of both their rights and responsibilities and gain self-confidence through developing assertive thinking and behaviours. Pupils are taught how to stay safe, including online, and who to speak to if they have any concerns.
Pupil wellbeing is central to our Downe House Riyadh commitment to the highest levels of pastoral care. Pupils are given opportunities to learn from mistakes in an emotionally safe environment, so that they become resilient and confident, and best able to navigate the complexities and challenges of modern life.
From a young age, pupils at Downe House are taught how to recognise their emotions and become empowered to make good, well-informed choices and take responsibility for their actions. Our pupils learn specific techniques to support optimal mental health, such as mindfulness, journal writing and developing a positive growth mindset. They learn the importance of maintaining a healthy mind and body, through the decisions that they make and the habits that they form.
We believe that wellbeing and self-worth are best achieved through strong pastoral structures and by a close partnership between school and home.
Girls enjoy the care and support of their class teachers and form tutors who appreciate the importance of creating a happy and safe environment for their pupils.
Class teachers and form tutors provide personalised support and guidance and are matched with pupils at each stage of the school based on their experience and expertise.
Every pupil meets with their class teacher and form tutor regularly to review their personal and academic wellbeing and progress. This opportunity to talk 1:1 plays a very important part in making sure that every pupil is on track.
Individualised support ensures that there is a personal spotlight on getting to know each pupil from the day they begin their educational journey at Downe House Riyadh. Pupils always know that there is a member of staff on-hand to support them – they are their personal champion.

In support of high-quality pastoral care, pupils at Downe House Riyadh become members of a House. The House system – a traditional feature of independent schools in the UK – provides wonderful opportunities to connect with pupils across classes and year groups, encouraging broader friendships and supporting our family-like school culture. Pupils enjoy time in their Houses, engaging in a broad range of collaborative and competitive events throughout the school year.
